Sapodilla is a charming stone clad cottage situated in a two acre garden on a hillside overlooking Falmouth & English Harbours. The owner built the original house 42 years ago and Sapodilla is her guest cottage set below the pool in a very private part of the garden. The garden is filled with indigenous trees and flowers with many palms and several fish ponds. The palm fringed pool, set away from the main house offers calm and privacy and lovely views. The garden is filled with birds, especially the three varieties of hummingbirds busy working away at the many flowers.
There are wonderful hikes right out of the garden gate. Hiking to Rendezvous Bay is one of Antigua’s five star adventures – from Springhill, you are already en route, and coming home to plunge in the pool and rinse off the salt and grabbing a cold rum punch in your cottage – makes it even more special. The hike takes between 30 – 40 minutes to one of the best beaches in the Caribbean, where you are often the only people on the beach! You can hike further to Carlisle bay or Wallings Dam in the rainforest. The owner can organize guides for these longer hikes.
A top class equestrian centre started by the owner is 3 minutes walk down the hill. The centre offers BHS (British Horse society) instruction and trails around the pretty valley and wild beaches. If you like riding and your partner is a sailor (or would like to learn) this is the ideal spot to stay. The owners are very keen sailors, and would be pleased to help organize this.
It is possible to spend a holiday at Sapodilla without a car, but we would recommend renting one. English Harbour is 7 minutes drive away with all its historical sites, great bars and restaurants, and a stunning beach. There are two good supermarkets nearby. Having a car gives you the freedom to explore the many beautiful beaches, and other hidden treasures. The owners would be pleased to help you with any information.
Previous guests have all loved the peace and tranquility, and yet the nearness of all the life in English and Falmouth Harbours.

A slice of heaven

This hideaway is even more beautiful in person! The scenery is to die for and location is near to restaurants and other popular activities in English Habour. We did have to drive through a long dirt road before getting to the cottage and I would recommend a jeep rental to navigate the potholes that are notorious in Antigua. Janie and Jeffery were excellent hosts and we look forward to returning soon!

This is a restful, little piece of heaven on earth.

If you are the kind of frequent Caribbean visitor who shuns the cruise ship hordes and seeks solitude and tranquil beauty, this is your place. We spent ten lovely days at Sapodilla -- only ten minutes' drive from the bustling life of English Harbour with all its "yachties" and the UNESCO heritage site at Nelson's Dockyard, the cottage is nonetheless a secret garden with beautiful flowering trees and bushes abounding, its own swimming pool, squadrons of hummingbirds and Antiguan yellow finches plus delightful hosts who furnish the cottage with all the necessities of a short-term stay (e.g. a kitchen well stocked with initial supplies upon arrival). The restfulness is exquisite. You'll need a car for daily excursions and dinner expeditions. Don't be put off by the bumpy access road -- dodging potholes is Antigua's national sport! We have stayed at about twenty places in the Caribbean and this cottage takes first prize for charm and restfulness. (If you want a small resort with similar tastefulness and charm try Nisbet Plantation on nearby Nevis.) The categories below hardly capture the allure of the place -- this is a destination for people who want to find tranquility below the surface of a place, to ease into its nature and avoid the banality of so much of today's prepackaged tourism. We will return!

Lovely and peaceful surroundings

We absolutely loved our stay in this little cottage, nestled in paradise ! We didn't meet Jeanne until day three of our trip, due to illness . But her friend, Zoey , handled everything. We had fresh bread, rum, fruit and coffee waiting for us in our cottage! Zoey gave us many suggestions for things to do during our stay. We were so happy when Jeanne was finally feeling better and able to come outside and talk. She is such a warm and friendly person. I think everyone on the island knows her! I could have stayed in that little bit of paradise for a long time! I would definitely recommend anyone stay here as it is such a special place.

Cosy Private Getaway in Paradise!

5 of 5
We stayed at Sapodilla Cottage Dec. 12-19, 2015. We were greeted by Janie, a very gracious woman, who brought us sugar water for the humming bird feeder. As soon as the feeder went up it was amazing to see the amount of birds that came around and stayed feeding, it was magical. The cottage is enchanting with a beautiful bed coveted with netting, very romantic. The bed and pillows were very comfortable. Loved the outdoor stone shower which is totally private. The kitchen is well-equipped with everything that you need for your stay. The gardens are beautiful with many fragrant flowers. The gazebo and pool area are very relaxing, again in a beautiful surrounding. Janie and Geffory are very nice people and are very knowledgeable about the area restaurants and beaches and sailing. Tremendous value for the cost. My husband and I would totally recommend a stay at Sapodilla.

Lovely Antiguan hideaway
Posted Mar 24, 2023

My daughter and I loved our stay at this studio cottage with it's open outside living with nature feel. We enjoyed the daily activities of the hummingbirds, finches and lizards around the verandah and cottage and the endearing flocks of bananaquits hanging haphazardly onto the feeder. There were an abundance of natural trees and flowers in the gardens and we enjoyed swimming in the wonderful swimming pool, which had fantastic harbour views, a beautiful gazebo and sun loungers. The pool was of a good size and surrounded by a very attractive patio area. The cottage has a good size comfy bed, plenty of storage, a fantastic outside shower and comes with towels and beach towels. We found everything we needed in the kitchen, and a cool box which we used for picnics on days out to the many beaches. Essentials were left for our arrival and the cottage has a lovely breeze with fans if needed. No television here as you would expect but the wi-fi worked well. Lovely discreet owners but there if needed. Janie the owner told us how to make up more sugar syrup for the hummingbird feeder and we had many visits from the friendly well behaved dogs. We had a rental car and visited many of the beaches. Galleon beach was our favourite as we found and snorkelled the wreck, saw a few good fish and loved snorkelling with the turtles who, as we did not touch them did not worry about us swimming with them. ( For the wreck and turtles walk round to the left, past all the chalets and short path through the trees to the last little sandy beach). We went horse riding at Springhill and swam with the horses in the sea which we both thought was an excellent experience. We ate out a few times and also shopped at a few of the supermarkets so we could eat out on the verandah at the cottage. Not much of a problem with mosquitoes as we used the citronella candles in the evenings and also used eco friendly mossie spray a few times a day which we brought from home. We always use incognito spray when abroad as it works really well and has no toxic chemicals (ordered from Amazon). There is an excellent mosquito net on the bed as well. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay and would like to visit again with other members of our family.

Quiet and private

Sapodilla is a small cottage located in lovely gardens, with views across to Falmouth harbour. We spent 17 nights there and had a wonderful time. On our arrival there were essentials for breakfast, making tea and coffee as well as chilled water in the fridge. Janie gave us a hummingbird feeder and we entertained daily by two types of hummingbird, a nice way to start your day. The covered terrace allows you to sit out even if it rains and provides shade if you find things too warm. The pool was in an elevated location with wonderful views, and a gentle breeze. The large comfy bed, and unique outdoor shower along with very welcoming hosts just added to the whole experience. We loved it.

Enchanting Retreat
Posted Dec 21, 2022

Looking to spend time in a romantic, off the beaten path, botanical setting with a beautiful pool mere steps from your door (which we had totally to ourselves)? Hummingbirds abound and will alight on the outdoor table in front of you to explore for any errant crumbs. A couple of geckos and tiny lizards scuttle about but only get close enough for a quick camera shot. Janie will allow the dogs to come by for short visits if you’re feeling canine deprived. The kitchen is set up with basic appliances and perfectly adequate for whipping up basic meals. That said, you’re not far from Falmouth and English Harbors to access local restaurants. The indoor/outdoor shower was a treat and absolutely private. Beautiful view of Falmouth Harbor from the terrace and pool area. Beaches are within reasonable drives - don’t miss Valley Church Beach, rated one of the top 50 beaches in the Caribbean and oddly, less crowded than some of the others. The Epicurean supermarket (providing everything you’re missing from home) is close by this beach at Jolly Harbor. Driving is on the left and you do need to pay attention to the potholes (and goats, dogs and people) but even though we rented a 4WD for the first couple of days, we did just fine with a small car for the rest of our stay – even the road to Sapodilla was manageable with a little care. (Titi Car Rental in Falmouth were incredibly obliging and helpful) While street signs are limited, locals are happy to direct you (turn left at the pink church!) if you get a little lost. We were looking for a little solitude to unwind and couldn’t have chosen a better setting. Janie and Geoffrey are friendly, accommodating and engaging but otherwise leave you to enjoy your privacy. Such a relaxing and pleasant alternative to resort-style vacationing, highly recommended.
